Why Drunk Like a Pole?
The French expression "Drunk like a Pole" (in French: «Soul comme un Polonais») is a stereotype that suggests Polish people drink excessively. However, that's not its original meaning, which was first uttered by Napoleon
- who at the Battle of Samossiera, after seeing the bravery of supposedly drunk Polish soldiers , said:
"I wish all of my troops were drunk like the Poles !".
